Enhance Fertility using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture
For many couples infertility can be a stressful and often heartbreaking time. The Western way to treat it is with IVF which treats the symptoms, not the whole body. A safe and more successful approach is to include acupuncture to enhance fertility. Or, use acupuncture alone, as (TCM) Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the whole body as integrated and interacting parts.
Controlled experimental studies showed positive statistically significant results for couples using acupuncture during the luteal phase of the woman’s cycle. The luteal phase follows ovulation. As an aside, acupuncture in the male partner increases sperm quality and mobility. The results were so encouraging that in 2005 the NIH funded research in this area.
Why does acupuncture work? It increases circulation and blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, aids in ovarian stimulation, improves implantation by increasing the thickness of the uterine lining and relaxes the person by lowering cortisol and increasing progesterone. Additionally TCM promotes following a good diet, healthy lifestyle and may include a reduction or exclusion of coffee, avoiding alcohol, limiting stress and practicing good sleep habits.
Couples experiencing infertility are suggested to use acupuncture for three months prior to their desired conception or a cycle of IVF. In practical terms, acupuncture twice a week until a positive pregnancy test is seen and once a week through the first trimester to reduce the occurrence of miscarriage.
In My Practice
I recently had just such a result after three acupuncture treatments. My patient was a 30 year old woman who had tried unsuccessfully to conceive with her partner for 2 years. She came to me for another health issue. At the intake appointment the infertility issue was discussed. I suggested trying specific infertility acupuncture points. I gave the patient three treatments. To her great joy she became pregnant soon after and is scheduled to deliver her baby next month.
